The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Ensemble Studies Unit: David Miller AM (Chair)
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Ensemble Studies Unit was formed in 1995. Students at both graduate and undergraduate levels are organised into ensembles ranging from string quartets and piano trios, to vocal duets, wind octets and percussion quartets. In second semester 2003 there are 76 groups in the programme. All ensembles attend regular tutorials and seminars with Conservatorium staff members and are provided with a wide range of performance opportunities in the form of concerts, broadcasts and country tours. Many of the groups have already established reputations in the wider musical community outside the Conservatorium.

The proceeds of all public performances given by student chamber groups are used to benefit all of the students in their preparation for a musical career. The Conservatorium is able to finance masterclasses with celebrated Australian and international artists, and to assist selected groups wishing to attend chamber music festival or further promote their professional careers. In 2003 student chamber groups have toured the North and South coasts, the Southern Highlands and the Mid-west of New South Wales. These tours are in addition to a busy schedule of concerts in and near the Sydney metropolitan area.

Masterclasses have been given in 2003 for the groups by the Henschel String Quartet (Goethe Institute), the Leopold String Trio (Musica Viva), the trumpeter Konradin Groth (Germany), repetiteur Cord Gaben (Goethe Institute), percussionist Ryszard Pusz and guitarist Raffaele Agostino.
