Sir WILLIAM WALTON
1902 - 1983
A major English composer who wrote two operas, several
ballets, a large amount of orchestral music including two symphonies,
choral and vocal music, and the scores for a number of films including
Richard III and The Battle of Britain His Coronation March "Crown
Imperial" was composed for the coronation of King George VI in 1937
and reveals Walton in his "pomp-and-circumstance"
mode, like his illustrious predecessor Edward Elgar. The three songs,
taken from a set called Bucolic Comedies, are from the period of his association
with the eccentric Sitwell family and London's Chelsea during the Roaring
Twenties "Make A Joyful Noise" is a biblical quotation used
by Osbert Sitwell in his libretto Walton's dramatic oratorio Belshazzar's
Feast (1931) This year we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of William
Walton's birth.
